Background about Jen Sorensen

Jen Sorensen's comics and illustrations have appeared in the Village Voice, LA Times, Daily Kos, The Progressive, NPR.org, Ms. Magazine, The American Prospect, MAD Magazine, Nickelodeon Magazine, Bitch Magazine, The Oregonian, the Dallas Observer, the Women's Review of Books, and dozens of altweeklies around the country.

Jen grew up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, best known for its Amish population and delicacies such as scrapple, chow-chow, and hog maw. She went on to attend the University of Virginia, where she successfully avoided taking any classes before 11a.m. except one.

Jen's weekly strip in 1998, and has since won seven awards from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, including First Place in 2012. She was also named the 2012 Herblock Prize Finalist, an award endowed by the legendary Washington Post cartoonist Herb Block. In 2010 she received an Aronson Journalism Award from Hunter College in NYC, and in 2000 she won a Xeric grant to publish her first collection of strips.

Jen's work has made cameos on the set of the TV series "Queer as Folk," and she was once clue "12 down" in the Time Out New York crossword puzzle. She has been interviewed by the Washington Post and BBC Radio.

In 2008, Jen traveled to Denver to blog and cartoon the Democratic National Convention for C-VILLE Weekly. She has given presentations at at the Ohio State University Library Festival of Cartoon Art, Netroots Nation, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the ACLU annual convention, and the Center for American Progress. A member of the the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and National Cartoonists Society, she lives with her husband and small Toto-like canine unit.
