Write a Winning Resume – 4 Great Tips

Alan Klein is Home Office Careers Chief Marketing Officer and he has been helping people fulfill their potential and achieve success throughout his own long career.

Writing a resume is one of the most important aspects of the job hunt. Keep these 4 easy tips in mind! Also, check out our Resume Templates.

  1. Research the Company – Customize Your Resume to meet the needs of each hiring company. Make sure you know the who, what, where, when and why about the company you are applying to. When were they founded, who is the CEO, what are the company’s values etc. Then try to reflect relevant information in your resume. For example, if a company values honesty, add a line in your resume about how your last employer trusted you with the petty cash or company credit card. Showing you are trustworthy is always beneficial!
  2. Format Should be Clear and Easy to Skim in One or Two Pages – See our resume samples and instructions. No need to say “references upon request” just have a list ready to go when they ask for it.
  3. Sell Yourself Big! – List your achievements, skills, unique jobs. Make sure they know why you are PERFECT for this job! Do you speak other languages? Do you have a degree? However, keep it honest. Hiring managers can spot inconsistencies and you don’t want to lose an opportunity because you stretched the truth. Be confident in what you have accomplished.
  4. Use Your Resources! – Have at least three people look at your resume for spelling errors and grammar mistakes. You can also experiment by asking someone to only spend one minute reviewing your resume (the average amount of time employers will spend looking at it) and then have them tell you the highlights. If they are not pulling out the most important points, you may want to reformat.

Also, call your references and let them know you are listing them as a resource. This shows respect, provides a positive reminder of you in their mind, and increases the chance of them connecting positively with an interviewer.

Are there opportunities for people residing outside the United States?

    • Hello Emmanuel! Yes, it it definitely possible to find a position available for residents outside of the US. It all depends on the job, and many employers we work with are open to people working anywhere in the world. But please be aware that some employers may have specific residency requirements, and only make offers to U.S. residents, so it’s best to check the job offers for details. What I suggest you do is join as a Basic member – it’s free! You’ll be able to search our website for new postings every day, and you will receive our daily members newsletter with new postings as well. When you find jobs that interest you and that do not require U.S. residency, then it will be a good time to upgrade to Premium membership so you may be able to apply to as many jobs as you want. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to reach out!
