When it comes to working from home, productivity is key. Any sort of distraction can keep you from getting your work done in a timely manner. To nip distractions in the bud, follow these simple tips.

Tip #1: Work in the same designated area daily

Having one area associated with work will keep you in the mood to get things done. For example, if you work on the kitchen table you may end up thinking about the dirty dishes instead of your to-do list for the day. Setting up an area just to tackle your work tasks is essential.

Tip #2: Work on a timer

There are many articles and videos on the topic of productivity and one technique that I’ve come across often is the idea of scheduled breaks.

If you are an iPhone user, start by downloading the application Flat Tomato. It’s a productivity scheduling app. Once the app has loaded, tap the clock. It will automatically set a 25 minute timer. Work on your task during this 25 minute interval. Once that time has past, a 5 minute timer will chime. These 5 minutes are yours to do whatever you’d like. Then another 25 minute time pops up for you to return to work. This process continues, giving you a 15 minute long break on every fourth scheduled break time.

You’d be amazed how this app can keep you “in the zone” for hours.

Tip #3: Block out the outside world

iPhones have a “Do Not Disturb” mode where your phone is basically silenced — with a few exceptions. You can set the phone to only ring if someone has called more than once or to ring only if someone on your favorites list calls. This will keep you assured that you will be notified of any possible emergencies while also keeping the noise level down.

There are also many apps and websites designed to blocking you from going on social media. This tip sadly doesn’t work for me since I have to be on social media for my job but if it’s not needed for you, cut the distracting cord. The website Cold Turkey can help you in this regard.

This goes without saying but you also probably shouldn’t watch TV while working. You may think this will keep you in front of the computer all day but really it’s like driving while texting. You think you are paying attention to the road but really you are not.

That’s it! Now you are ready to get your work done in a timely manner. Make sure to tell me in the comments your favorite tips for staying on task. We’d all love to hear them!
