Working from home often means flexible work hours, the absence of commuting daily, fewer office disturbances and more time with family, right?

But for many, working from home also means dealing with the every day tensions between your career and personal life – all in the comfort of your home.

Recent studies have revealed that people who work from home tend to work longer hours than those who work in an office. This might mean the extra hours you put in will do little to reduce your growing stress and exhaustion level.

While you can’t control everything around your work environment, that doesn’t mean you’re powerless. Finding ways to manage stress isn’t about making some huge life changes, but rather about focusing on one thing that’s always within your control – “You.”

Identifying the signs of stress is not an easy task. For that, you should keep a close check on your own habits, attitude and excuses (e.g. blaming someone else for your stress).

Until, and unless, you accept the responsibility for the role you play in creating or maintaining stress, the stress level will remain out of your control.

So, to start identifying your triggers, start keeping track of them. Use a notepad or something like Trello, to just keep tabs on high stressful activities.

2. Prioritize and Organize

When your work stress is alarming for you, there are simple steps you can take to control the situation.

Create a balanced schedule by analyzing your responsibilities and daily tasks. Try to strike a balance between your work, personal life, social activities and downtime.

Do not over-commit. If you have too much work to complete, then differentiate between the “shoulds” and the “musts.”

Plan a break in between your work, take a stroll or sit back and relax away from your workspace. A break from work will help you relax and recharge to make you more productive.

3. Quality Time With Family

When you are working from home, you are saving your commuting time, which also means more time to work and quality time with family.

When your workday is over, you can always lessen your stress by shifting your focus from your family. This will make you feel better and help you with work-life balance.

4. Meditation and Deep Breathing

Few minutes of meditation and deep breathing can help ease anxiety and reduce stress.

Take a five-minute break. Sit straight on the floor. With eyes closed, focus your attention on reciting a positive mantra silently or loudly like “I am at peace.” Let all distracting thoughts float away like clouds.

You can also do some deep breathing exercises. Sit straight, eyes closed, and hands on your belly. Inhale slowly through the nose, as you feel the breath starting from the abdomen up to the top of your head. The reverse has to be done as you exhale through your mouth.

Meditation alters the human brain’s neural pathways which will make you more resilient to stress. Deep breathing counters stress by lowering the blood pressure and the heart rate.

Try to incorporate meditation and deep breathing throughout your workday.

5. Stay Connected

People working from home might feel isolated because they stay at home all day, work long hours and don’t have time to socialize.

Because of the likelihood of having more stress when you work from home, it’s important to stay a part of your work social circle and keep up your communication skills.

Make a phone call instead of communicating through emails – and if your client is located in the same geographical location than schedule a monthly visit.

Make it a point to schedule a meeting with your colleagues – maybe a lunch or a cup of coffee. You never know how these in-person meets might benefit you than those virtual meetings do.

This will help you deal with stress when you work from home.
