As a work at home mom (WAHM), when you have children at home you might find it challenging to stay focused on your work tasks.

If you have toddlers the biggest problem usually is that they are distracting. Yes, they are busy pulling out everything right from emptying the cabinets to cluttering the room. And you can’t just sit them in front of the screen to play some BJ or a few hands of poker.

Therefore, they are busy in keeping you busy too.

But, usually the best tips are either working when the kids take a nap or watch TV, hiring a babysitter or trying to get your work done when everyone else is in bed.

While these things can help in the short run to finish up deadlines, handle new prospects or streamline administrative tasks for your business, it won’t last long.

Children want your attention and when they don’t get it, they aren’t the happiest campers.

So, what can you do, a WAHM with a little child running around, to keep them happy and busy so you can get your tasks finished?

Set The Tone Early

For those considering working from home, it’s best early on to set the expectations while you work. If you avoid setting the tone early on in your career, you run the risk of having it come to an end.

This might mean, whenever you take a call or sit at your computer, your child must be quiet or playing with a toy or activity.

So, to help your child stay happy while you work, plan fun activities around your schedule.

So, what activities work to keep little minds engaged?

The following 5 activities can keep your child or children occupied while you peacefully complete your duties.

1. Craft and Coloring Books

The stores are full of books and materials related to hobby ideas for every age group.

These include:

  • Coloring
  • Painting
  • DIY (do it yourself)
  • Sticker books
  • Beading necklaces
  • Cutting and gluing activities
  • Play-dough

Kits are available online or you can even get them at any local craft store.

Check out Pinterest for ideas on craft projects for toddlers and older kids.

So, as you answer those client emails or complete a time sensitive submission, your little one can be busy creating beautiful crafts for you.

Or else, with just some basic crayons and blank paper, your child can spend time creating wonderful abstract art, which you can frame and hang on the wall of your home office.

2. Activity Area

To ensure your little one will be happy playing on their own, consider taking some time on the weekend or mid-week to create an activity area with various activities near you office.

Such activities include:

  • Dollhouse or farm set
  • Play kitchen
  • Indoor camp
  • Tool bench with blocks
  • Tea party
  • Pet veterinarian
  • Doctor
  • House
  • Sensory boxes

But, many children don’t know what to do or have a limited play experience with these activities. To help them start playing, you could use a method called Stay-Play-Walk away.

Essentially, you start playing with them and get your child involved in the activity. You play with them for a while and then you walk away. Generally, children learn to stay and continue playing.

Make the activity area special and keep it off-limit the rest of the day. When you need to do some unfinished work it will still be exciting for your child.

3. Brain Working Apps

There are many mobile apps available on Google Play Store and iTunes that are ideal for older kids who can use a mobile phone.

Sudoku, Match Up-Exercise Your Memory, or Brain Cafe/GeoQuiz will help exercise your child’s cognitive development and keep him or her busy while you are working.

4. Story Book Reading Time

Another activity to keep your kids busy is to take a trip to your local library and let your child or children select some interesting books from the kids’ section.

There are also “books on tape” for children – if you can tolerate some noise – this might be something your child can expect when you work – when mommy works, I get to listen to a book on tape.

5. Desk or Study Time

You can alternately have your kids set up a desk near your workspace and “pretend” to be just like mommy.

For toddlers, give them some toys, old phones, an unused keyboard, scrap paper or a pen and let them work like their mommy.

For older kids, you can set up an area where they can do their homework or reading assignments as you finish up your work tasks.

Rotate and Change Toys

Remember kids get bored of their toys and activities after awhile, so make sure to rotate them by pulling out new toys whenever you have work to be completed.

It’s an easy cost effective way to keep your child happy each time they play.

These are just 6 activities or tricks every WAHM should have in their arsenal when they want to work peacefully with your child.

So, tell us, what things do you do to make sure your little one is happy while you work from home?
